Since 2000, Lima has been one of the fastest growing airports in Latin America, averaging 11.5% per annum, and fuelled by several factors including LAN Airlines development of the airport as a key regional hub operation. The airport is currently operated under a 30-year concession contract, and is served by a single runway which is at its operational capacity and a second runway is not expected to be operational until at least 2019.

Consequently, LATAM Airlines Group retained Aviotec  International, in association with Scott Associates and DKMA, to identify short-term (2014-2018) operational, physical (infrastructure) and technological solutions to increase terminal and airfield operational capacity and mitigate arrival/departure delays until a new midfield terminal and second runway are operational.  The study included a physical and operational assessment of the terminal and airside and modelling of the terminal, airspace & airside operational areas in order to identify current capacity/delay “hotspots” and test various solutions.

The Team also prepared a traffic forecast and undertook a comprehensive review of the Airport’s current master plan which includes a new midfield terminal (with 69 contact gates), new second runway and associated infrastructure, terminal apron, cargo hangar facility and airline support services facilities.  The full master plan has an estimated capital cost of over US$1 Billion.
