News - CATSA Using Montreal-Trudeau As Test Bed For New Passenger Security Checkpoint
Montréal Trudeau is being used as a test bed by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) for a new pre-board screening line that is expected to transform the passenger experience at airport security.
According to reports, the new line is part of a CATSA Plus concept that involves bringing together several equipment and process innovations that it has successfully trialled over the past few years to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of its screening operations. The 'plus' is a more pleasant and seamless passage through the checkpoint for air travellers.
"As Minister of Transport, I have been looking for opportunities to make travelling by air more efficient for Canadians," said the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport. "I fully support the CATSA Plus programme as it provides Canadians with improved screening services and a better traveling experience. I applaud CATSA for being innovative while maintaining and upholding Canada's stringent aviation security standards." The new line being trialled at Montréal-Trudeau's screening checkpoint 'A' (Domestic/ International) includes features such as motorised rollers, a remote X-ray viewing room, an automatic bin return system, and improved divest and repack stations for passengers. CATSA Plus is adaptable to different airport environments. Elements can be added or removed depending on checkpoint size, space and passenger volumes.
Montréal-Trudeau was selected for the trial because checkpoint 'A' offers adequate space to install a full line with all the main features. "We are very pleased to work with CATSA to test the new CATSA Plus screening concept," said James Cherry, CEO of Aéroports de Montréal. "This innovative solution addresses specific passenger needs. Whether passengers are familiar with the screening process or require more time to go through it, CATSA Plus allows them to move at their own pace. "I am confident our passengers will like this user-friendly concept that maintains security and ensures an efficient screening process at our checkpoint A."
The trial will determine the impact on screening line performance and efficiency and evaluate the passenger experience. The results will allow CATSA to make any refinements required before the first full deployment in Canada of a complete CATSA Plus checkpoint in the new International Terminal at Calgary International Airport at the end of October.
